Paneer Dodi, known in Sanskrit as Ashvagandhika (अश्वगन्धिका) or Paneerphool, is a small perennial shrub Withania coagulans of the Solanaceae family — closely related to the famous Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). Native to dry, arid regions of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Northwestern India, Paneer Dodi is known for its distinctive property of coagulating milk — hence its name “Paneer Dodi” (milk-curdling flower). The dried fruits are traditionally used to curdle milk to make a form of vegetarian rennet-based cottage cheese. Beyond this culinary use, Paneer Dodi is a significant Ayurvedic medicinal herb valued for its blood sugar-regulating, liver-protecting, and anti-inflammatory properties.
